A 17-year-old girl, in an alleged relationship with a local man, turned up at Delhi’s Tilak Vihar police post after her family got into a fight with the man’s family.
A 17-year-old girl, who refused to go home fearing that her family would beat her over her alleged “relationship” with a local man, committed suicide by hanging herself at Tilak Vihar police post in Delhi early on Sunday.
The girl had befriended the 20-year-old man, a neighbour in Tilak Vihar, but that led to frequent quarrels between their families, deputy commissioner of police (west) Vijay Kumar said
“On Saturday night, the two families got into a fist fight and approached the Tilak Vihar police post around 10:30 pm. Both parties had assaulted each other. The girl and her alleged male friend did not accompany them,” said the DCP.
As the police were speaking to both the parties, the girl landed at the police post around 2:30 am. “She said she did not want to return with her mother and brother. She said that they would beat her. The local police decided to send her to a Nari Niketan (shelter for women),” said the DCP.
But in the meantime, the police got busy in dealing with a relative from the man’s side as he claimed he was brutally assaulted and wanted an FIR to be registered against the girl’s family.
During this time, the girl locked herself in a room at the post. When the police and her family broke open the door, they found she had hanged herself using a chunni, said the DCP.
A magisterial enquiry and another by the police’s vigilance unit has been ordered. “If any negligence is found on the part of the police personnel handling the case, we will act against them,” the officer said.
